So we had a long journey ahead of us and had a day and a
half to do it in. It was Thursday morning and we needed to check in for our
boat trip no later than 4pm on Friday. We mapped a route through Rockhampton
(town of Cows and beef pies), which was over half way and found a rest stop in
the small town of Yaamba.
We hit the road and must have hit about 20 road works (where
we waved and gave a thumbs up to all the bored workers) – currently on the East
Coast, the Australian Government has a scheme to improve all the major roads,
which of course included Bruce Highway (A1), which we were using to get up the
coast! It added on about 2 hours to our journey, along with a few stop offs for
food, petrol and stretching our legs. It was an 8-hour journey.
We stopped off in a cute little town called Childers halfway
there and treated ourselves to Subway subs! Sooo good! Then we found a cheap
store that everyone bought nail varnish from.
Our second last stop was to a petrol station where we had to
have some Rockhampton beef pies, when in Rome. I got a chili con carne one,
they were gorgeous! Australia is BIG for pies!
We saw a lot of DEAD kangaroos on the side of the road,
whether they were real or just placed there to continue to trick us tourists I do
not know, all I do know is we are yet to see a real live kangaroo and we have
travelled A LOT so far?!?!
When we finally reached Yaamba rest stop just after dark, we
all got ready for bed and had a girlie pamper session. Perfect place for it, in
a massive truckers rest stop with huge semi-trucks everywhere and loud
compression breaks sounding every once in a while! An early night to sleep for
an early start!
